The City of London from Medieval to Modern Times.
Mark Connelly

We welcome Mark Connelly with 3 lectures themed The City of London from Medieval to Modern Times. They are :-

SPIRES AND TOWERS:  the churches of the City of London

Only one square-mile in size, the City of London contains 39 parish churches and each one tells a fascinating story.  As well as those produced by Sir Christopher Wren after the Great Fire, there are medieval survivors such as St. Bartholomew the Great.  This session explores the variety of the churches from Dick Whittington’s parish to that of Samuel Pepys, and the stories behind many other churches.

REFUGEES AND REFORMERS:  Huguenot Spitalfields and Jewish Whitechapel

The architecture of Whitechapel and Spitalfields closely reflects the characteristics of its communities.  This talk takes in three hundred years of East London history.  There are wonderful buildings such as the Nicholas Hawksmoor Christ Church Spitalfields, the new model dwellings built for the poor of the area and the exotic Moorish arcades of Fashion Street, and a host of interesting figures.

THE BARBICAN ESTATE:  The Phoenix of the Blitz

Following the devastating bombing in the Second World War, the City of London began planning for reconstruction.  One scheme was to regenerate the 35 acres raized around Aldersgate Street, and the Barbican Estate was designed by Chamberlain, Powell and Bon, who combined bold modernism with reverent attention to the past.

The day will start at 10.30am and finnish at about 3.00pm.Tickets will be on sale at our October lecture. Price - £46 to include mid-morning refreshments and a two-course lunch.
